DECEMBER, 2019 WORD OF THE MONTH:
JOY: FINDING A WAY TO BE HAPPY EVEN WHEN THINGS DON'T GO YOUR WAY.
MAT CHAT TOPIC OF THE MONTH:
RESPECT MEANS SHOWING GOOD MANNERS TO EVERYONE: EVEN IF YOU'RE IN A BAD MOOD, EVEN IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE PERSON, AND EVEN IF THEY WERE RUDE FIRST.
DEAR PARENTS AND/OR GUARDIANS:
This month we are learning about respect, especially respect for those who are younger, weaker, smaller, less skilled, etc. than us. Martial Arts is an excellent vehicle for teaching respect. On the mat, students are expected to show respect to peers, instructors and others as part of their training. It is critical that children learn that respect is not just for Martial Arts, but should be used wherever they go.
HOW CAN YOU HELP??
** Be a role model.
Whether you're dealing with an unhelpful customer service representative, a slow cashier or traffic jam, while you are with your child, maintain a respectful attitude and tone.
** Instead of punishing you child the second you feel they are being disrespectful, first try and understand their behavior.
Ask, Did you know you were being disrespectful when you did/said?" Turn this into an opportunity for discussion rather than an immediate scolding.
**Show your child respect.
Like all humans, children have boundaries, sensitivities, quirks and special interests. Respecting their unique traits shows them you respect them.
HAVE A GREAT MONTH!!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
