- MAKE SMART DECISIONS
- MAXIMIZE YOUR POTENTIAL
MAT CHAT TOPIC OF THE MONTH:
OPTIMISM MEANS WE "LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE!" THOSE WHO ARE OPTIMISTIC BRING A HAPPY, POSITIVE OUTLOOK TO THEIR LIVES AND THE LIVES OF THOSE AROUND THEM.
DEAR PARENTS AND/OR GUARDIANS:
This month we are focusing on optimism! This is a wonderful value for children to " train their brains" even at a young age, so that they will continue on a path of positive thinking for life. Not only are optimists more fun to be around, but optimism can actually have mental health benefits! Pessimism, on the other hand, can lead to or worsen anxiety and depression. Here's how you can help foster a positive, optimistic mindset in your child/children:
HOW CAN YOU HELP??
** Help facilitate a stress-free home environment.
** Handle their complaints with empathy, but remind them that a negative attitude can make them feel worse.
**Model optimistic thinking. Display a positive mood in the face of challenges or hassles.
**When possible, turn a negative situation into a game.
Raining on the day you'd planned to go to the park? Build an indoor blanket fort! Time to do that chore no one likes? Create a point system based on the components of the task and see who can get the high score!
**Know the signs of depression and other mood disorders in children.
These may include: irrational or uncharacteristic anger, social withdrawl, fatigue, pain (usually head or stomach) without clear cause, and dificulity focusing. If your child displays these or other symptoms, consult a doctor.
HAVE A GREAT MONTH!!
